Send a Handwritten Letter
Write a handwritten letter to your parents or caregivers, sharing why you'd love to receive this gift. A handwritten letter feels more personal and meaningful, showing the thought and effort you’ve put into your request. It’s a wonderful way to express your feelings and show them that you have put some thought into your $mart decision.
Instructions
- Click on "Print or Share Your Results" to print out your DIMS SCORE® report so that you have all the numbers you used and calculated in front of you. Attach the report to your hand-written note.
- Take a clean, crisp piece of paper and begin with the phrase “Dear….. Mom & Dad, Aunt Margo, Uncle Leon, Samantha", whoever you are writing to.
- Explain to them you are writing in response to their question, “What would you like for your birthday?” or “What would you like for a Holiday Gift this year?".
- Very politely state that what you would really use and appreciate is the “thoughtfully preferred” gift of – whatever it is you are asking for, be that hockey tickets, new soccer cleats, a 3D pen, or a purse.
- Finish your letter with a warm complimentary close such as “Thank You so Much”, “Respectfully”, “Sincerely” or “Love……Your name”. Don’t forget that this format can also be used for a thank-you note, which you will want to send after your birthday or the holidays.

Dear Aunt Margo,
I am writing to you today because you very kindly asked Mom what I would like for my birthday next month. As you will see from the attached, I would really use and appreciate new Keds sneakers like the ones Taylor Swift often wears. I am a size 4 and would love the red Keds with white polka dots pictured on the next page (or you can draw a picture of what you want).
Thank You very much for asking Mom what I would like.
