Early Financial Education or Not: A Comparison

Here’s a comparison between kids who receive early financial education and those who don’t. Learn why mindful spending workshops are the kind of early financial education that convinces young people that anyone can get and use financial information to improve their lives.

Learning about money young is helpful.

Kids who receive early financial education:

Kids who do not receive early financial education:

a) Get comfortable asking questions about money. Gain confidence by learning that financial jargon is no different than vocabulary words in any other subject.

a) Are hesitant to ask questions about money and remain intimidated by financial jargon, which prevents them from discovering how easy it is to learn about money.

b) Use digital payment methods responsibly. Are aware that one still needs to think about a purchase, even if it is “easy to make”. Know that money comes from working to earn wages.

b) Don't always use digital payment methods responsibly. Often confuse phone payment apps, Debit, or Credit cards with how they are funded (earning wages).

c) Become smart spenders and natural planet protectors. They only buy what they'll use and value, thus lowering their carbon footprint and their contribution to landfills in their lifetime.

c) Don’t understand the power of smart spending to avoid disappointment, reduce waste, and protect the planet.

d) Contribute to family harmony. They make fewer, better-quality spending requests and lay out information about a possible purchase in a way that most parents are open to receiving.

d) Frustrate their parents with requests to spend. They don’t appreciate the impact impulse purchases have on household budgets because money is rarely discussed.

e) Can recognize that childhood financial legacy doesn’t have to be destiny; they get to practice smart spending which helps them avoid typical pitfalls when making future money decisions.

e) Continue to falsely believe that someone from “their background” doesn’t have financial agency; see money as either plentiful or scarce, based on their experience.

f) Enter adulthood with productive money habits and beliefs. They're used to thinking about their economic future, which helps them spend wisely and plan for long-term goals.

f) Enter adulthood unsure of how to shape their economic future. They're not as equipped for the future, as they don't get to develop a critical life skill—mindful spending—early.

How does Gifting Sense help?

We provide a fully accessible way for children from all economic backgrounds to practice thinking before buying!

The DIMS—DOES IT MAKE SENSE?® SCORE Calculator is a simple, mindful spending tool that gives kids a quick way to think through possible purchases before making them. There’s no fee, registration, or personal information collected.

This “spending speed bump” naturally leads to better-quality consumer decisions, ones we don't regret, which is why students, parents, and teachers love it. Helping kids "think before they buy" helps them build productive money habits long before they become adult income earners.

Mindful Spending Workshop:
A Hands-On Experience

Gifting Sense workshops move thinking before buying from something kids do to “get what they want” to something that helps them want items and experiences that make sense.

Children learn how to make informed spending decisions that align with their family's needs and values in an engaging way. Let's normalize that being a thoughtful consumer does not mean you never get to do or buy anything fun.
